Suppose you want to go office of a company naming "ABC Social media ", you dont know the address, What will you do? You will refer to a Directory, You will look for the Page having business name Starting from "A" and during your lookup you will reach the desired company address, but how this addresses reach to this directory? there are certain Government/Private organisation which collect this data and with a new edition of directory, the company name sorted in Alphabetical order is added to the directory.

With internet things have changed, Search Engines are web Directories of the billions of websites on the internet. Some of these sites are added to Search Engines by the Web-Masters(Owners of the websites), on the other hand, search engines have special softwares (web Crawlers), which visit each website and webpage on the internet, index it and stores it''s important keywords with itself, based on the content of the page. Once a user come to the search engine types his required keywords, the search engine looks up keywords and in response provides a sorted result to the user. This sorted result is based on certain calculations relating to the page which range from the users on the page, Relevance of keywords from search keywords, content on the page, when was the page last updated, its referrals and their weight etc.
